GISCorps Seeks Executive Director to Build on Two Decades of Humanitarian Service

The volunteer-driven geospatial organization is recruiting its first paid executive director as founder Shoreh Elhami prepares for a leadership transition.

GISCorps, the humanitarian GIS volunteer program of the Geospatial Professional Network (GPN), is seeking its first paid executive director to help guide the organization into its next chapter.

Founded in 2003 by GIS professional Shoreh Elhami, GISCorps connects geospatial expertise with organizations responding to disasters, humanitarian emergencies, and other challenges around the world. Its volunteers have supported projects ranging from earthquake and hurricane response to disease mapping, nonprofit data development, and GIS training.

Over more than two decades, GISCorps has attracted upwards of 12,000 prospective volunteers from 162 countries and undertaken more than 380 missions worldwide.

The leadership search comes as Elhami, who has devoted thousands of unpaid hours to building and managing the organization alongside her professional career, confronts a diagnosis of a rare form of brain cancer. Her decision to share that news with the geospatial community underscores the importance of establishing a sustainable leadership structure for the organization she founded.

As detailed in a November 2026 Esri ArcNews profile, Elhami’s career spans local government GIS, urban planning, enterprise data management, and education. Her vision for GISCorps has demonstrated the value of applying geospatial technology and professional expertise to humanitarian work.

The executive director position is part-time and fully remote, requiring approximately 10 hours per week at compensation of approximately $50 per hour. Responsibilities include technical and strategic guidance, evaluation of prospective missions, coordination with volunteers and partner organizations, and support for long-term fundraising and organizational sustainability.

Candidates should have at least 10 years of professional GIS experience, including technical or project leadership. Experience with nonprofit organizations, humanitarian initiatives, or volunteer-based programs is particularly desirable.

Applications are due November 9, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a résumé and cover letter to advisoryboard@giscorps.org.
